EZE Group Darts ace Robert Thornton won his first European Tour title after hitting top form in Dusseldorf on Sunday.
The Scottish ace defeated Kim Huybrechts in the final to win the European Darts Open.
Thornton, who had defeated Dimitri van den Bergh to reach the final day, saw off fellow EZE Group ambassador Simon Whitlock in the last 16 before sealing a 6-4 success against Jelle Klaasen to reach the semi-finals.
A Fabulous Performance
There, he produced the performance of the tournament to claim a fabulous 6-1 triumph in another battle against EZE Group man James Wade, in which ‘The Thorn’ averaged almost 112.
And he continued to play brilliantly in the final, posting a 106 average in a 6-2 defeat of Huybrechts.
“I’m really pleased with how I played and I’m over the moon to win,” said Thornton who completed the victory with a 116 finish.
“I seemed to get better as the weekend went on and it is a great feeling to win a European event because they are not easy.
“This sets up my confidence well for the Matchplay and the rest of the year.”
Thornton, who rose back to number eight in the world rankings after adding £20,000 to his haul of prize money, is back in action in Blackpool next week when he takes on Keegan Brown in the first round of the World Matchplay.
Thornton’s fellow EZE Group ambassadors Wade and Whitlock will also be in action, with every match being shown live on Sky Sports and various channels worldwide.
