Ref. Football Shirt Sponsorship, I was a Director of Kettering Tyres Ltd. Wellingborough and was present at the first Meeting with Derek Dougan when he offered our Company the opportunity to Sponsor the “SHIRT DEAL”. WE VOTED UNANIMOUSLY IN FAVOUR – AND THE REST IS HISTORY. I am an authority on the whole successful
but sorry episode (thanks to the intervention of “The Football Authorities”). It was heart-breaking for Dougan particularly when so soon afterwards those same people “in authority” were falling over themselves to take the money and I have lived to see Shirt Sponsorship become the cornerstone of World Football. Shame on all concerned in the early 1970′s for hammering Dougan – and then subsequently cashing in on his brilliant idea.I repeat, I claim to be a bit of an authority on the whole episode and bless The Doug, and the memory of him.He was a great character.

Thank you Geoffrey, it’s a pleasure to here from someone actually present when history was made. I only knew DD from his appearances on Telly. He seemed an interesting character and a man of strong opinions.
